EHMA PRESENTATION – Gilbert Garcia Speaks at East Houston Medical Association Monthly Meeting

Gilbert Garcia, the managing partner for Garcia, Hamilton & Associates and former Metro Commissioner, spoke at the East Houston Medical Associations (EHMA) monthly meeting on Thursday, August 26. Garcia, Hamilton & Associates, previously Davis Hamilton & Associate, is a multi-billion-dollar asset management firm. Garcia joined in 2002 and later bought the struggling firm and was able to grow the assets under management from $800 million to $18 billion, making Garcia, Hamilton & Associates, the biggest bond firm in Texas. The firm is now 100% minority and female owned and is owned entirely by employees.

EHMA PRESENTATION – Advances In Spinal Surgery

Neurosurgeon Dr. Steven Zielinski presented advances in spinal surgery technology and detailed the steps that he takes to rehabilitate individuals with injured spines at our July monthly meeting. Dr. Zielinski was the first surgeon in the U.S. to perform a screw and metal free fusion. With these innovations, Dr. Zielinski is able to offer his patients a less invasive surgery and a quicker heal time while reducing their risk of infection. He has decades of experience and is the founder of Texas Spine & Neurosurgery which brings first class spine care to East Houston and the Beaumont/Port Arthur area through East Houston Hospital & Clinics.

EHMA PRESENTATION – Breast Cancer Awareness

On Thursday, May 6th, 2021, East Houston Medical Association hosted a presentation at East Houston Imaging & Breast Center on breast health to kick off Mother’s Day festivities. This week’s meeting was the highest attended event the East Houston Medical Association has held, thus far.

In this meeting, Dr. Harnoor Singh, MD MBA Director of Breast Program, general surgeon Dr. Leonidas Miranda MD FASC, and plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Art Armenta, MD provided members with information on updates in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and reconstruction.

In the US, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. However, women who get regularly screened for breast cancer have a 47% lower risk of dying from the disease compared to those who don’t. As a result, breast cancer deaths have been declining since 1990 thanks to early detection, better screening, increased awareness, and new treatment options.

EHMA OSHA PRESENTATION – Work Safely Today, Go Home Safely Tonight

East Houston Advanced Imaging & Breast Center hosted East Houston Medical Association (EHMA) on April 1st, 2021 presenting information to members regarding safe practices and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA’s mission is to prevent work related injuries, illnesses, and deaths.

In this meeting, Joe Salcido, owner of CPR Training Safety course, discussed the importance of safety in the workplace. On average, 14 people die on the job each day. A few precautions discussed to ensure the safety of employees were to educate, have hands-on training, trigger training, praise and rewards.

Our goals for this meeting were to identify hazardous conditions in the workplace, cover OSHA’s employee training requirements for workplace hazards, and provide general awareness training that will help avoid accidents, reduce injuries and get everyone home safely.
